Apple pulls 'at least one' app from China App Store for banned books

updated 12:40 pm EDT, Thu April 4, 2013

Company complies with government censorship

Apple has pulled "at least one" app from the Chinese App Store for containing books banned by the Chinese government, the Financial Times reports. Although the name of the app hasn't been identified, it is said to have provided access to 10 books, include three by political activist Wang Lixiong, whose works are mostly illegal in the country. The banned books in the app discuss Tibet, the future collapse of the Chinese government, and a visit by Wang to Xinjiang, followed by his detention by state security.

The Times notes that the app in question is still available in App Stores outside of China. Apple spokespeople haven't responded to Bloomberg inquiries by phone or email, but that may be due to a public holiday.

Companies like Apple and Google have come under fire for bending to Chinese censorship. At the same time, however, Western businesses risk not being able to operate at all if they do leave free speech intact. The government has also been gradually opening up speech, cracking down mainly when it thinks it's essential to preserve the Communist Party or certain key policies.
