Rumor: Google to out revised Nexus 7 tablet in July

updated 06:51 am EDT, Wed April 3, 2013

Tablet to switch from Nvidia to Qualcomm processor

Google is said to be launching a revised Nexus 7 tablet by July, according to a report. The new tablet will apparently replace the Nvidia Tegra 3 inside the current generation with a Snapdragon processor from Qualcomm, citing a reduction in power consumption, as well as having a higher resolution screen and thinner bezel, and may also cut the price down to $150.

The two sources of Reuters claim that Google is aiming to ship around eight million of the new Asus-built tablets by the end of the year, achieving this primarily by aggressive pricing strategies. One source suggested the new Nexus 7 would sell for $200 with the current generation discounted, while another suggested the new tablet could end up being priced at $150 and the current model being discontinued entirely.

A more powerful and cheaper Nexus 7 will most likely help the search engine in its attempts to fight off Amazon and its Kindle Fire HD in the Android tablet market. Recently, Amazon was forced to deny rumors that it is building a sub-$100 7-inch Kindle Fire HD, claiming "It's not happening. We are already at the lowest price points possible for that hardware."

If Google is to launch a new version of its Nexus 7, it may show off the tablet at its sold-out I/O event in mid-May. Last year, the event saw the current Nexus 7's revealed on-stage, as well as the Nexus Q social streaming media player, and an extreme demonstration of Google Glass.

Google, Nvidia, and Qualcomm declined to comment on the story to Reuters.
