HTC One gapless design next to impossible to repair
The HTC One has been subjected to the customary teardown by iFixit. The HTC One, which has been delayed by over a month due to parts shortages and yield issues due the complexity of its construction, has picked up iFixit's first ever score of 1 out of 10 for repairability. The repairers found that the One's seamless, screwless design makes it almost impossible to remove the display to access the internals without damaging the rear case.
The iFixit team found that once the zero-gap designed was prized open with a heat gun and a suction cup, it took them over half an hour to separate the rear aluminum case from the functional components of the phone. According to the team, it seems that the One was not designed with a view to being opened and repaired in any way. In taking the Gorilla Glass panel off the front of the device, the team managed permanently damage a plastic panel surrounding the aluminum case.
Internal components used in the construction of the One includes 32GB of Samsung NAND flash memory, Elpida DDR2 RAM paired to its Snapdragon 600 CPU, a Synaptics touch controller, a TriQuint multi-band power amplifier and a Broadcom baseband radio that support Wi-Fi 802.11ac and Bluetooth 4.0. The battery weighs 38.3 grams while it is rated at 2300 mAh. This compares with a 1440 mAh battery in the iPhone 5 and a 2100 mAh unit in the Galaxy S III.
