UK newspapers The Sun, Telegraph adding paywall to sites

updated 06:59 am EDT, Thu March 28, 2013

Paywall additions continues trend in online newspapers

Two newspapers in the United Kingdom are placing their content behind paywalls, a move already performed by a number of prominent news organizations. The Telegraph has expanded its existing paywall for international readers to cover the UK, while News International has confirmed that tabloid The Sun will be under a similar arrangement later this year.

The Telegraph is allowing visitors the ability to read 20 articles per month at no charge, with usage beyond that point requiring a subscription. The smaller 2 ($3) package offers unlimited access through the website and smartphone apps, while a Full Digital Pack for 10 ($15) per month adds access to the tablet version of the Telegraph apps.

While News Corp has not revealed what subscription format The Sun will use, after confirming it will happen to Media Week, it may end up opting for a similar subscription to stablemate The Times. The Digital Pack provides web access and use of the smartphone and tablet apps for 4 ($6) per week, the Classic Pack combines the smartphone app with web access and a physical newspaper delivery for 6 ($9), and the Ultimate Pack for 8 ($12) adds back in the tablet edition to the classic pack. An earlier offer, which provided a Google Nexus 7 as part of an 18-month subscription, is still being honored.
