Amazon smartphone rumor suggests 4.7-inch screen, Q2 release

updated 03:59 pm EDT, Wed March 27, 2013

Foxconn manufacturing claimed cause for device delay

Amazon is still working on a smartphone to go along with its Kindle Fire tablet line, according to a new rumor. The retailer will allegedly be eschewing the 4.3-inch screen that some state it will use in favor of a larger 4.7-inch display, and is looking to release the long-rumored device at some point in the second quarter.

The sources of Digitimes also claim that Amazon is working on "enhancing other specifications of the smartphone," though did not disclose which parts, but the display increase is said to have been down to higher demand for larger screen sizes from customers. While it is looking for a second quarter release, the source claims that a production process at Foxconn may have delayed the potential release further into the future.

Earlier rumors placed the Amazon phone as being revealed at a company event in September last year, but were unfounded. At the time, it was said to run on a forked version of Android that is similar to that powering the Kindle Fire, and would rely on Nokia's mapping rather than Google's own services.
