Hyperkin debuts Retron 5 multi-platform retro gaming console

updated 08:47 pm EDT, Mon March 25, 2013

New device aimed for July release at less than $100

Retro game supporter Hyperkin has announced its latest version of the the multi-cartridge Retron system -- the Retron 5. The RetroN 5 will have five cartridge slots allowing users to play original NES, SNES, Genesis, Famicom, Game Boy Advance, Super Famicom, Mega Drive, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy cartridges. The chipset used in the new device eliminates region locks and increases compatibility, as well as plays both PAL and NTSC cartridges.

The Retron 5 ships with a Bluetooth wireless universal controller, allowing for a playable distance of a minimum of 15 feet without losing sync from the console. This new controller boasts a Microswitch directional pad instead of a traditional pad. An unnamed ARM system-on-a-chip drives the hardware emulator.

Other improvements in the console include up-converting video game resolution to 720p with the help of new shaders; enhanced game audio; manual and passive overclocking, allowing the user to decide game speed on the fly; advanced connectivity options such as HDMI, and save states for each game saved on a SD-card -- allowing users to stop play at any time.

When an interviewer from Slashdot asked about other consoles, the company responded that it "would love to support the old systems like Atari, Sega Master System, maybe even Game Gear, but those pin connectors don't exist," said project manager Lawrence Lee, "and to develop one, it's just not [cost-effective] at the moment. So we have to stick with these consoles, which already have pin connectors in the market.

Detailed pricing and availability information is not available. Hyperkin is hoping to keep the cost of the console under $100, and is shooting for a July release.
