FCC chairman Julius Genachowski resigning from role

updated 11:49 am EDT, Fri March 22, 2013

Step down for Commission head due in coming weeks

The chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, Julius Genachowski, has announced he is stepping down from the position. Head of the FCC after being nominated by President Barack Obama and confirmed by the Senate in 2009, Genachowski will depart from the role in the next few weeks.

During Genachowski's tenure as Chairman, he has overseen the redistribution of spectrum, adopted new standards for in-flight Wi-Fi, monitored a number of high-profile mergers and agreements, and also examined the cellphone unlock ban. Genachowski previously worked for the FCC between 1994 and 1997, and was nominated after helping in President Obama's 2008 election campaign.

A successor to Genachowski has yet to be named, but is likely to be nominated by President Obama before the position is vacated.

Genachowski is not the only member of the FCC to announce that they are leaving. Robert McDowell, senior republican on the five-member commission panel, is also stepping down in the coming weeks.

    Probably good news

If he's one of Barry's appointments, it's probably good that he's leaving. Unfortunately, a similar ideologue will likely be replacing him.

What are you on about? As long as they are your kind of ideologues everyone will be happy? Give it a rest.
