Google said testing Nexus 5 prototypes, LG model leaks out

updated 06:32 am EDT, Sun March 17, 2013

LG would-be Nexus 5 features 5.2-inch display, Snapdragon 800

The first purported leak of the Google Nexus 5 has surfaced courtesy of Androidandme. Google is reportedly evaluating a number of prototype devices from several manufacturers, although the details of a model submitted by LG, codenamed 'Megalodon,' has been the first to leak out. If accurate, the LG's would-be Nexus 5 promises to continue the trend towards ever-larger displays packing a 5.2-inch 1080p OLED display.

Google is said to be aiming for an October 2013 launch, which aligns with its previous Nexus smartphone launches, although it has not settled on a device maker. However, the purported specs of the LG device are impressive, while LG also may have an advantage as the incumbent manufacturer of the current Nexus 4. LG's Nexus 5 candidate is powered by Qualcomm's yet-to-be mass-produced Snapdragon 800 super processor, clocked at 2.3Ghz.

The LG 'Megalodon' may move beyond the Google self-imposed storage cap of 16GB and come in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB options. Incorporated into the rear of the device is a 16-megapixel camera made by Omnivision capable of recording video in 4K Ultra-HD at 30fps and 1080p video at 60fps. The front camera is rated at 2.1-megpixels and can shoot video at 1080p 30fps.

Like the HTC One, the LG 'Megalodon' will carry front facing stereo speakers, but will also integrate DVB-T/ATSC antenna for receiving live television signals. Unlike the Nexus 4, however, LG's Nexus 5 will include support for 4G LTE networks thanks to Qualcomm's multi-band LTE technology. To help keep the LG 'Megalodon' running for a full day, it is said to be fitted with a very high capacity 3300 mAh battery.

An October debut for the Nexus 5, whomever Google chooses to eventually partner with on the device, would also likely coincide with the anticipated launch of the next major revision of Android codenamed 'Key Lime Pie.'
