Apple now blocking older versions of Java 6, 7

Due to multiple and in-use vulnerabilities that are actively affecting user systems, Apple has taken the step of blocking the web plug-ins for all older versions of Java 6 and 7. Browsers on Snow Leopard, Lion and Mountain Lion that don't include their own built-in versions of the Java plug-in must be updated to the current version, which is update 17 for Java SE 7 and update 43 for Java SE 6. Java is not installed on modern Macs by default, and disabled automatically if not used for 31 days or more even if installed. The move does not affect local installations of Java, only the web plug-in.

DraftCode brings PHP development to iPad

Freeridecoding has announced DraftCode ($5), its iPad-only tool for PHP development. The app lets users write, run and debut PHP on the iPad based on standard PHP 5.4.10. It features full support for POST and GET forms, importing image resources from the Camera Roll or photo library, a flat file structure workspace, relative paths for local file links, a customized keyboard to aid coding and the ability to send files to other iPad apps. The program does not require access to a server or even an Internet connection, and can display the output as either rendered HTML (as it would appear in Safari) or as HTML source code for debugging. It requires iOS 6.0 or later, and is available now at version 1.0.1, which fixes a few bugs and implements some interface improvements.

iSkin debuts 'thinnest, lightest' Slims iPhone 5 case

Accessory maker iSkin has introduced a new skin-thin iPhone 5 case the company says adds full protection to the latest iPhone model, including an anti-glare, bubble-free screen protector. The new "slims" case ($35) is just 0.4mm (0.016 inch) and made of flexible but durable BPA-free polycarbonate that is non-conductive, causes no radio frequency interference and is heat-resistant up to 185 degrees Fahrenheit. The hard plastic adds scuff and scratch protection and even covers the Home button while leaving it usable. The three-piece casing is available in wood grain, gray camouflage and white chevron designs.
