Gowex rolls out free 1Mbit Wi-Fi across New York City

updated 11:15 am EST, Tue March 5, 2013

Over 1,900 hotspots providing free Wi-Fi coverage to users

Wi-Fi provider Gowex has turned on its Wi-Fi network covering New York City, providing free Internet access to residents and tourists. Covering the areas of Brooklyn, the Bronx, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island, the 1,953-hotspot network is available to anyone wanting to use the 1-megabit connection through their mobile device.

Potential users can download a free Wi-Fi app for the service on iOS and Android, allowing for quicker connections, finding alternative hotspots, and also providing municipal information, or alternately can directly connect to the access point. Though it is a free service to users, Gowex will be earning revenue from advertising, as well as allowing carriers to offload their data through the network rather than using cell towers. A faster connection is also available for users willing to pay.

New York is just the first of a number of locations Gowex hopes to provide Wi-Fi for, with other metropolitan locations said to be on the company's hit list for future coverage.

This is not the first time that New York citizens has received free Wi-Fi. One pilot program through Van Wagner Communications offers Wi-Fi through specially-equipped advertising boards, while the Wall Street Journal and Boingo have also offered similar schemes.
