iBooks 3.1 brings full iBookstore to Japan

updated 11:39 am EST, Tue March 5, 2013

Includes manga, other paid content

Apple has released iBooks 3.1 for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch. While a minor update in most countries, v3.1 is the first to bring the full iBookstore to Japan. Previously, only public domain books were available in the country; now though the store has a variety of paid titles, including manga comics.

Talks with Japanese publishers have allegedly been ongoing for years, but only in January did reports emerge that Apple was making progress on deals. The iBookstore has been the slowest of Apple's online stores to expand, falling behind even movies and TV shows. The complex nature of publishing deals has typically been blamed for the situation.
