Apple issues promised post-attack Java update

updated 04:55 pm EST, Tue February 19, 2013

Lion, Mountain Lion, Snow Leopard get Java SE 6 fixes

Apple has released a promised Java update in the wake of an attack by Chinese hackers. The patch is available in two versions, for Lion/Mountain Lion and Snow Leopard. In both cases the code should bring Java SE 6 up to v1.6.0_41.

The same exploit was used by Chinese hackers to attack Facebook in January. Like Facebook, Apple claims not to have had any data stolen, but does acknowledge that some of the computers used by its workers were compromised.

    But...

There is no mention whether this update is necessary if you've installed Oracle's Java SE 7 v1.7. Does it matter, one way or the other, if is it installed in addition to Oracle's 7? The fact that it shows up on my Mac App Store's Updates list would seem to indicate that it's okay to install it in addition to Oracle.
