Amazon, Best Buy offer discounts on MacBook Pro

Best Buy adds extra $20 discount for in-store pickups


Both Amazon and Best Buy are offering new discounts on the MacBook Pro. Best Buy's prices are part of a two-day sale, running today and Saturday. A 13-inch, 2.5GHz non-Retina Pro for example costs $1,050 at the retailer versus Apple's normal $1,199 pricetag. At the opposite end of the spectrum, a 15-inch, 2.6GHz Retina Pro is $199 below Apple's cost at $2,600. For any Pro, Best Buy is offering an extra $20 off if a person orders online but picks up at a store.

Amazon appears to have lowered its prices to better compete. For comparison, the company is offering the above 13-inch system for $1,100, and the 15-inch Retina model for $2,600.

Similar sales on the MacBook Air took place last week. The vendors involved may be trying to clear out holiday stock, or simply improve first-quarter traffic. Hardware refreshes for the Air and the Pro aren't expected for several months.
