Apple announces annual Lunar New Year sale

updated 10:20 am EST, Tue January 22, 2013

Event set for January 25

Apple has formally announced this year's Lunar New Year sale throughout much of southeast Asia. The event, also known as "Red Friday," is scheduled for January 25, and will include discounts on Macs, iPads, iPods, and accessories, as well as free shipping. An official gift guide has been published to go with the event, but as usual Apple hasn't revealed what the exact discounts will be. Those should only be published on the 25th itself.

Apple only hosts its Lunar New Year event in a handful of regions. These include mainland China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand. The sale is roughly equivalent to Apple's Black Friday event in the West. The company has been seen to be paying more attention to Chinese and Asian holidays with more active promotion, such as a gift guide for Chinese New Year (which is in early February) which is also being highlighted on its Asian websites.

Last year, the Red Friday sale offered modest discounts of eight percent or less on iPads, and four to five percent on selected Macs and iPod models.
