Sony launches the Xperia Tablet Z, quad-core, 6.9mm thin

updated 05:05 am EST, Mon January 21, 2013

Sony Xperia Tablet Z is the thinnest tablet in the world

Sony has taken the covers off its recently rumored Xperia Tablet Z powerhouse in Japan. As we anticipated, the new device sports an all-new design making it the thinnest 10-inch tablet currently on the market at just 6.9mm and 495 grams. It also incorporates a high-resolution 1920x1200 display that is enhanced with Sony's Mobile Bravia Engine 2 tech.

At its heart, the Xperia Tablet Z is the latest device to pack Qualcomm's Snapdragon S4 Pro chip clocked at 1.5GHz. This mated to 2GB of RAM while Sony has built in 32GB of storage as well as support for microSD expansion. Sony has upped the ante for a tablet with an 8.1-megapixel Exmor R rear camera (likely using the same Sony sensor as in the iPhone 5).

As with the forthcoming Sony Xperia Z flagship smartphone, the Xperia Tablet Z also incorporates protection from both water and dust with a repellant coating applied inside and outside of the device. The battery is 6,000mAh, which should be good for over 8 hours of life, which is very reasonable given its thinness.

We've reached out to Sony for comment on when to expect Xperia Tablet Z. It's smartphone stablemate should be hitting the market in March, so it's reasonable to expect that the Tablet Z will become available in a similar timeframe.
