Samsung revises Chromebox with faster CPU

Samsung has updated its Chromebox with a second-generation 1.9GHz Intel Core i5 processor. Although not a newer 'Ivy Bridge' class CPU, the new chip is still a significant step up from the Intel Celeron processor found in the previous generation. Amazon has the new model listed at $422, although the device has yet to show on Samsung's US website.

The new Chromebox (XE300M22-A02US) retains its Mac mini-inspired design as well as the 4GB of RAM and 16GB SSD configuration. The Chrome OS device, which requires an Internet connection in order take full advantage of its cloud-based services, continues to include extensive connectivity options. In addition to 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, the device sports a DisplayPort, DVI port and no less than 6 USB 2.0 ports.

Google has had limited success with its Chrome OS devices, unlike its wildly successful mobile operating system that has pushed Samsung on to record a sequence of record profits. Its reliance on an always-on Internet connection has been its biggest hinderance, however in the case of the Chromebox, a stable Internet connection is a non-issue unlike the Chromebooks.
