Possible iOS 6.1 GM being readied for developers

updated 02:29 pm EST, Fri January 11, 2013

Could be released as soon as today

Apple is doing internal testing of a new and possibly final developer build of iOS 6.1, with plans to release it soon, says a source for iFun. The person adds that if all goes according to plan the beta may even become the official gold master, essentially the same version of the OS to be released to the public. The new build could come out as soon as today or Monday.

iOS 6.1 represents a minor evolution in terms of features, for example adding the ability to buy movie tickets through Siri's Fandango applet. When setting up a device for the first time, though, people will now have to enter security questions for iCloud, and third-party apps could become more useful thanks to an improved Map Kit framework. Apps will now be able to find Maps addresses based on points of interest, such as restaurants or coffee shops.
