Eyes on: Samsung's 85'' S9 Ultra HD TV

S9 breaks from traditional form factor

All of the biggest companies at CES introduced Ultra HD televisions, but Samsung's S9 arguably brought the most distinctive design. Electronista stopped by the company's CES booth to take a closer look at the unique televisions, which float the display panel inside a larger square frame.

While most companies compete to offer the thinnest bezel and most minimalist design, Samsung placed an enormous frame around the display. The frame goes all the way to the base and well above the TV, leaving empty space around the top, bottom and sides. We doubt many buyers will see this as an advantage in any way, as viewers may prefer to concentrate on the visual content rather than a freestanding frame.

Despite the unattractive appearance, the picture was impressive. LCD technology does not compare to the pure blacks of OLED panels, however Samsung's Precision Black Pro technology does a decent job of improving the contrast ratio. A gigantic spread is the only way to appreciate Ultra HD resolution, and at a close distance.

Samsung has yet to announce pricing or launch dates for the S9.
