First Look: Samsung NX300 with single-lens 3D system

updated 11:40 pm EST, Tue January 8, 2013

New NX-series flagship

Many of the headlining products at CES have focused on 3D display technology, but Samsung introduced a new NX-series camera/lens pairing that enables consumers to record their own 3D videos and stills--from a single lens. Electronista took an early look at the new NX300 camera, which now serves as the NX flagship, along with the 3D prime lens.

The NX300 camera body features a 20.3-megapixel CMOS sensor and ISO 100-25600 sensitivity, while the hybrid autofocus system utilizes both phase and contrast methods. Users can also shoot at up to nine frames per second, at shutter speeds of up to 1/6000 second.

We like the camera's 3.31-inch AMOLED display, though we are curious to find if the AMOLED panel accurately presents colors for quick reference. Many buyers will appreciate the "retro" styling, and the NX300 appears to offer the same quality construction that is found on other models in the lineup.

The new 45mm prime lens is what makes the package unique, enabling users to shoot 3D content with a traditional compact-system camera. Samsung claims the new offering is the world's first "one-lens 3D system" for a consumer camera, switching between 2D and 3D as needed. Until we have a chance to take 3D video/stills and take a look on a 3D display, it is difficult to declare the single-lens system as superior, but it is certainly intriguing.

The NX300 carries a $749 price tag, while the 45mm lens will retail for $499, however launch dates remain unclear.
