Rumor: Microsoft to launch Surface Pro on January 26 or 29

updated 05:11 am EST, Fri January 4, 2013

Calls to Microsoft stores offer specific Surface Pro street date

Microsoft is allegedly going to release the Surface Pro, the tablet that will run the full version of Windows 8 instead of Windows RT, on January 26th or January 29th, according to two rumors. The earlier date would make the launch take place exactly 90 days after that of the Windows RT-based original and Windows 8 itself.

Calls to Microsoft stores across the US by CNET offered responses of Surface Pro being released at the "end of the month," though one store specifically said January 26th. Sources of Softpedia, on the other hand, tell of an unveiling of the Surface Pro on January 29th, with sales in the US to start on the 30th.

The Microsoft Surface Pro will be offered in two versions: 64GB of storage for $900, and 128GB for $1000. While keeping the design principles of the Surface, the Surface Pro will be able to run legacy Windows applications, using its Intel Core i5 processor, and will have Surface Pen and Palm Block technology.

This price puts the Surface Pro squarely into MacBook Air territory, and that's not good for Microsoft. This is especially true if the Surface Pro doesn't include a keyboard at that price. And, this time Microsoft can't argue that they can run Microsoft Office while their competitor doesn't.
