Amazon offers students $50 discount on Kindle Fire HD 8.9

updated 11:29 am EST, Wed January 2, 2013

Promotion requires Amazon Student Prime membership

Amazon is offering a discount on its large Kindle Fire HD 8.9 for students, ahead of the winter term. The offer, lasting for the entire month of January, grants Amazon Student Members with an active Prime account a discount of $50 off the tablet, the same as a one-day deal the retailer held in mid-December.

While active Amazon Student members paying $39 per year for Prime can take advantage of the offer, current students can apply for a free six-month trial of Amazon Student using their .edu e-mail address and still receive the discount, according to Slashgear. The 16GB Wi-Fi only version becomes $250 when the discount is applied, making it the same cost as the 32GB version of the 7-inch Fire HD.

The 8.9-inch version of the Kindle Fire HD has a screen capable of displaying a 1920x1200 image, giving it a pixel density of 254ppi, and also uses a true-wide polarizing filter for full-spectrum color from a variety of angles. The OMAP4470 processor is claimed to be faster than Tegra 3, while its wireless networking uses two antennas and MIMO radio technology.

The Wi-Fi 32GB and 4G LTE 32GB and 64GB versions are all also available under the discount, pricing them at $320, $450, and $550.
