Developer editions of Ouya ship on time

Dev version of console features transparent case, microUSB port

Developer editions of the Android-based, open-source gaming system called Ouya have shipped on time. People who pledged $700 to the extremely-successful Kickstarter campaign will be receiving a developer's edition of the console, as well as early access to the Ouya Development Kit, three months before mainstream editions will be sent to donors.

An unboxing video, in an update by the Ouya development team, shows that the developer version of the 3-inches cubed console will have a frosted translucent casing, with two matching translucent controllers also bundled in the package. In a change to the original console's design, it has a MicroUSB port built-in to make connecting the Ouya to a computer for development purposes easier, though it isn't clear if this is only included in the developer's console or will appear in the final version. The controllers that are included are said to not be the final version, with work still to be done on the triggers and directional pad, but in a change to normal controller design, the batteries will be located in the handles as opposed to the back side.

The Ouya Kickstarter campaign saw 52,000 backers pledge a combined $8.5 million for the console. It is said to have a quad-core Tegra 3 processor with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of flash storage, and though it currently uses Android 4.0, developers are working to make it run Jelly Bean.

The final edition of the Ouya console is scheduled to reach donors by March 2013, while those buying the console after the Kickstarter drive ended will have to wait until April or later to receive theirs.
