US, Canada Gmail users still get free domestic calls

Gmail users who rely on the email service to place telephone calls caught a break this holiday season, as Google announced that it would be extending the free telephone call feature in Gmail through next year. The extension is applicable for users in the United States and Canada, and it applies to domestic telephone calls. Since introducing the feature in 2010, Google has, each year, extended free calling for US and Canada customers.

The feature works using Google's Google Voice service, and requires that users download a software package in order to work. Domestic calls for users in Canada and the United States are free, while international calls are offered at very low rates. In most other countries, domestic and international calls are available at low rates.
