Report: Acer to launch sub-$100 tablet in emerging markets

updated 05:10 am EST, Mon December 24, 2012

Iconia B1 to have similar specifications to Kindle Fire

Acer is reportedly gearing up to release a sub-$100 tablet at the start of 2013, cheaper than devices made by the company already on the market. The Iconia B1 will allegedly be an Android tablet with a seven-inch, 1024x600-resolution screen, a 1.2GHz processor, and similar specifications to the Amazon Kindle Fire, with its $99 price tag aimed at penetrating emerging markets rather than the US.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the tablet has already made its way to the FCC for clearance, though this is not a sign that it will be sold in the US. The combination of the suggested specifications and low price point sets the Iconia towards markets such as China, which are rife with low-budget devices. An analyst for Daiwa Securities claimed that "Chinese white-box tablet makers are expected to sell some 60 million tablets next year," and that "none of the major PC brands sells a tablet to compete with them right now."

Another source to the report claims that the company will be launching it own budget Windows 8 tablet early next year, suggesting the company is bringing its previously announced plans for a Windows RT tablet earlier than the second quarter. Acer kept away from launching its own until it had time to assess how Microsoft's Surface impacted the market, calling the Surface rollout a "very aggressive plan."
