Netflix US offline for some due to Amazon serving issues

updated 09:15 pm EST, Mon December 24, 2012

Amazon Web Services blamed by Netflix engineer

As of Christmas Eve, some US customers are having issues with Netflix streaming, due to an issue with Amazon Web Services -- specifically the data center in northern Virginia that was also responsible for taking down a number of popular sites last summer. The problems began being reported after 4PM EST, and at this hour Amazon is still reporting some issues with CloudSearch and Elastic Load Balancing issues at the center that may continue to affect customers.

The issue with Netflix does not affect all customers or device platforms, but the company has already apologized for the issues in its Twitter feed. A number of popular web sites are hosted through Amazon Web Services and its data centers, as has been revealed when the northern Virginia center suffered strong storms earlier this year. Outages due to storms in June took down Instagram, Foursquare, Reddit and Quora among many other sites.

In October, an outage at the same center affected service on Flipboard, Pitchfork, Skitch, Github, Airbnb, Minecraft and Coursera. There is no ETA for full restoration of service in this latest incident yet, though most Netflix customers should be up and running now.

Way to pass the buck, Netflix.

You know what? I'm paying you for a service, not Amazon. If it doesn't work, it's your responsibility. Perhaps you should speak with your I.T. team and review your business continuity planning. Especially during the (likely) most critical window of operation for your business.
