Google launches Android API for video embedding

updated 08:11 pm EST, Sat December 22, 2012

API allows for full-screen video, ads, captions

Google-owned YouTube has finally launched its Android API, which will allow developers to more fully integrate their apps with the world's most popular video sharing service. The new API allows developers to embed high-quality videos without having to route users to YouTube's website. The API was pre-announced at this year's Google I/O, but launched just yesterday in an experimental form. YouTube does not expect that there will be any major interface changes going forward.

The API supports high-quality video playback on devices running Android 2.2 or newer, fullscreen playback, and closed captions. It also includes support for closed captions, YouTube ads, and integration with the Android YouTube app.

Further documentation on the API is available on the YouTube API Blog post that announced the new feature.
