Samsung unveils Galaxy Grand with 5-inch display

updated 04:37 am EST, Tue December 18, 2012

Samsung adds the Grand to the Galaxy line of smartphones

Samsung has taken the covers off the Galaxy Grand, the latest in its ever-expanding array of devices wearing the Galaxy brand. The new device continues the current design language seen in the Galaxy S III and the Galaxy Note II. The Galaxy Grand also sits between the 4.8-inch Galaxy S III and the 5.5-inch Galaxy Note II with a 5-inch display.

However, while the Galaxy Grand looks promising on the surface, it appears that Samsung is pitching this as an unusual mid-range device. Its 5-inch TFT LCD display is a relatively low resolution at 800x480 (WVGA), while it is paired to an unspecified 1.2GHz dual-core processor, instead of the quad-core Exynos processors fitted to both the Galaxy S III and Note II.

The Grand incorporates 8GB of user memory and can support microSD cards up to 64GB. The front facing camera is 2-megapixels, while the rear camera has an 8-megapixel sensor. Connectivity includes Wi-Fi 802.11n, DLNA, Bluetooth 4.0, but its radio is only 3G. On the up side, the Galaxy Grand will be available in a dual-SIM version as well as a single-SIM model.

The Galaxy Grand runs Android 4.1.2 'Jelly Bean' and also supports Samsung's Multi Window features including Popup Video. Samsung has not indicated pricing or availability at the time of writing.
