updated 04:07 pm EST, Fri December 14, 2012

New dock available by end of the year

Vantec Thermal Technologies has revealed the new addition to its hard drive dock lineup, the NexStar Wi-Fi Hard Drive Dock. The new model allows users to connect wirelessly to the data stored in the user's hard drive over the integrated 802.11n Wi-Fi connection, allowing anyone with Wi-Fi capable devices to access the data. In addition, Vantec has released apps on the Apple App Store and Google Play to allow mobile devices to use the data.

The NexStar WiFi App will be available at the time of dock release, and will be free. Features have been added to the NexStar Wi-Fi App for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch -- including AirPlay support, allowing data to be streamed to any devices supporting the technoloy. A uPnP server is built into the device, allowing for media streaming to compatible devices.

The dock allows one 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch SATA drive to be installed. In addition to the Wi-Fi accessibility, the dock boasts a USB 3.0 connector for local connectivity. The device requires Windows XP, Vista, 7, or 8 -- or Max OS X 10.6 or greater. Formats supported in iOS include H.264, .mov, mp4, .m4v, AAC, MP3, M4A, AIF, WAV, Office 97 or greater, PDF, and RTF.

The device will be available for purchase this month. No pricing has yet been announced.
