Time Warner, Sky+ now offering on-demand live streaming

Subscribers with iOS apps in both the US and the UK on Time Warner and Sky+ (respectively) now have on-demand programming available to them, albeit in different ways. The iOS app for Time Warner TV was updated on Tuesday to add live video on demand from over 100 providers in both standard and high-definition. In addition, the update adds a "recent" button to help users get back to frequently-accessed channels quickly. A similar update will be arriving for Android and Windows users in early 2013.

The Sky+ app from Britain's Sky network has also been updated, adding the ability to add on-demand video and "catch up" recordings to a customer's Sky box while on the go. Users can now queue up on-demand movies and TV shows for watching at home later, and order rental movies. In addition to Sky's own content, the app offers shows from ITV, Channel 5 and the various Sky channels. BBC iPlayer listings aren't yet supported in the app. Both the Sky+ and TWC TV apps are free from the App Store.

FileMaker Go for iOS surpasses 500,000 downloads

FileMaker has announced that its two iOS apps, FileMaker Go for iPad and iPhone, have now crossed the 500,000 sold mark. The current version (v12) was released in April of 2011, though the first version was released in mid-2010. The company says it is "very happy" to see the rapid adoption of the mobile version, and offers several resources to help both desktop FileMaker users and those new to database development learn to integrate FileMaker Platform and iOS solutions. An overview video is available, along with a webcast and a free 30-day trial of FileMaker Pro 12.

WordPress 3.5 reworks media workflow, Retina graphics, more

Wordpress.org has updated its flagship self-titled blogging software to version 3.5, with a strong emphasis on ease of creating media galleries for photos, videos and other media. The release, named "Elvin" after jazz drummer Elvin Jones, also comes with a mobile-oriented default theme called Twenty Twelve and now uses Retina-quality graphics throughout. It also streamlines some less-used functions, moving them to the console in order to freshen up and simplify the style of the dashboard. In addition, the update features a new color picker, media manager, the Open Sans typeface, a new welcome screen, and better mobile accessibility.
