Ting opens up service to existing Sprint smartphone owners

updated 12:06 pm EST, Tue December 11, 2012

Tiered service carrier remains closed to iPhones, BlackBerry

Ting, the MVNO from Tucows, has opened up its service to customers with Sprint handsets. The "Bring your Sprint Phone" program allows users on Sprint to use the service, with seven handsets from Sprint's range being supported by the carrier, which happens to use Sprint's network to function in the first place.

Owners of a HTC EVO 4G, EVO 3D, EVO Shift, Samsung Epic 4G, Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch, LG Optimus S or Motorola Photon 4G will be able to use the service with official support offered by Ting, according to the company's blog. Owners of a BlackBerry, iPhone, LTE, or Push To Talk device will not be able to transfer over, and nor will customers of Boost and Virgin Mobile, despite using the same Sprint network that Ting does.

Starting on February 1st, the carrier shifts customers from one tier of service to another based on their usage, instead of charging for over-usage. Going over an allowance pushes the user to the next highest tier, while going sufficiently under could earn a credit back to the customer on their next bill.
