Instagram photos vanish from Twitter as policy finalized

Twitter card support totally dropped as social site fight intensifies

Photo sharers who operate across both Twitter and Instagram likely woke this morning to find that the hand-in-glove interoperation of the two sites has come to an end, as Instagram finally cut off support for Twitter's Twitter card feature. The Twitter feature that displays an image of shared photos within the Twitter stream will now show a blank white space when a photo is shared from Instagram. The photo sharing site's decision to kill part of its compatibility with Twitter epitomizes the growing competition between the two sites, a competition that has only intensified since Facebook bought Instagram earlier this year.

Twitter cards allow users to "expand" a tweet, showing shared content without the user needing to leave Twitter. Instagram initially killed Twitter card compatibility last week, though the site brought the functionality back for a short time. Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom said that the move was "the correct thing for our business" at the time, though he claimed that Instagram "will always be integrated with Twitter."

The competition between the two social networks has heightened since Facebook bought Instagram for $1 billion earlier this year. Twitter is set to introduce its own set of Instagram-like filters, due in part to the growing popularity of Instagram. Twitter, as evidenced by its Twitter card feature, is interested in keeping users on its site as long as possible. That has become more difficult in recent months, as Instagram has passed the microblogging site in terms of active daily users.
