Barnes & Noble launches Nook Video in United Kingdom

Streaming service first to offer UltraViolet purchasing in UK

Literary retail chain Barnes & Noble has opened its Nook Video movie and TV store in the United Kingdom. The video service is also the first digital retailer in the UK to offer UltraViolet titles for sale, allowing customers to buy films through the system as well as registering codes from purchased DVDs and Blu-Ray discs bought in stores.

Deals signed with BBC Worldwide, HBO, NBCUniversal, Sony Pictures, Starz and Warner Bros also adds more content for shoppers to buy, such as Game of Thrones and Sherlock. Agreements with other studios are also in the works, according to the company, though they have yet to be revealed.

The decision to launch the Nook Video store puts the company ahead of Amazon in the UK. Amazon does not operate its Instant Video service in the country, and its film rental and streaming service LoveFilm does not contain options to outright buy content from the company.

Currently Nook Video is available only to owners of the Nook HD and the Nook HD+. Nook Video apps for other devices will be made available in the near future.
