Unlocked iPhone 5 to go on sale in US tonight?

updated 04:10 pm EST, Thu November 29, 2012

Retail chain expected to follow shortly after Apple Store debut

Unlocked models of the iPhone 5 could reach Apple's US online store as soon as 9PM Pacific Time, according to retail sources for 9to5Mac. It's expected that 16, 32, and 64GB models will sell for $649, $749, and $849, respectively. While unlocked iPhones are already on sale in countries like Canada and the UK, the US market normally lags behind as a concession to carriers.

The sources add that retail Apple Stores should start selling unlocked iPhone 5 units soon, and have even started receiving shipments. Despite this, no specific launch date has been rumored.

It's also believed that Apple plans to expand its Personal Pickup program. The option lets people reserve an iPhone 5 online, but pick it up at an Apple Store instead of having it delivered. Currently, shoppers have to make a reservation after 10PM local time; under the new scheme, people will allegedly be able to reserve a phone at any time of day.
