Japan-only handset uses low-power display technology

Sharp will start shipping its first smartphone using the company's new IGZO display technology from November 29th in Japan. The Aquos Phone Zeta SH-02E uses the new ultra low-power consumption display, built using an indium gallium zinc oxide technology, which requires significantly less backlighting than other displays to be visible.

The Android 4.1 smartphone uses a 1.5 GHz Snapdragon S4 quad-core processor with 2GB of RAM, 32GB of storage upgradeable via microSD, and is bundled with a 16-megapixel camera with 16-times digital zoom and optical image stabilization, NFC, Bluetooth, DLNA, and LTE connectivity. The headlined display measures 4.9 inches, and has a resolution of 1280x720, according to Impress Watch.

While the handset is unlikely to ship anywhere but Japan for the moment, the IGZO technology has already been used elsewhere, namely in the ASUS Padfone 2.
