Company aims to woo Gmail users

Microsoft has continued to promote its Outlook web-based e-mail service, introducing an Android app and a range of new features. The Outlook app for Android appears to provide the same basic interface as the company's equivalent Hotmail app, which still carries the older branding. The app helps avoid compatibility issues with Exchange ActiveSync native support for some devices.

In a blog post that was spotted by TechCrunch, Microsoft claims that participants in a comparison survey preferred's user interface over Google's Gmail service. Respondents are also said to have preferred Microsoft's approach to spam management and document sharing.

Aside from the Android app, is also being revamped with one-click archiving, additional keyboard shortcuts, and new color themes in the customization options.

The Android app is now available through the Google Play portal, while the changes will roll out over the next few weeks.
