Near-manufacture 5-megapixel camera to undergo testing

A prototype of the full production camera add-on for the Raspberry Pi has been demonstrated in public. Shown at the Electronica 2012 trade fair in Munich, Germany last week, the 5-megapixel camera is said to be close to the eventual final production model, suggesting it will be released to hardware hobbyists in the not too distant future.

Capable of recording 1080p H.264 video at 30 frames per second, the camera board will plug into currently unused CSI pins on the Raspberry Pi itself via a ribbon cable. The board is to be put through its paces in a testing chamber to check for electromagnetic radiation in December, and is expected to cost around $25 upon release.

Owners of the micro PC also received news that the block-based construction game Minecraft will be ported to the platform. Based on Minecraft: Pocket Edition, it will have support for a number of programming languages, allowing players to make significant changes to the game before testing it out. Though a release date has not been revealed, it is claimed that it will be made available at no charge.
