Google now expected to ship five million Nexus 7 units in 2012
The Nexus 7, a joint venture between Google and Asus, debuted to favorable reviews and solid initial sales, and now it appears that Google is ordering even more units of the 7-inch tablet than it had previously anticipated. Strong demand for the Nexus 7 reportedly has Google going back to Asus to produce more units. According to estimates, Google may wind up shipping twice the units it had expected to move in 2012.
BGR carries word that Google has indeed returned to Asus in order to increase its order for units. Google had initially expected to ship about 2.5 million Nexus 7 tablets in 2012. The most recent reports, though, have Google increasing its cumulative shipment volume for 2012 to more than five million units.
The Nexus 7 has proved a boon for manufacturer Asus as well. The company reports moving about a million of the tablets per month, almost certainly above any other Android tablet. Strong Nexus 7 sales, along with growth in PC and convertible tablet sales, led to the Taiwanese manufacturer posting its largest quarterly profit in more than four years in October.
