Successors to Intel Clover Trail, Bay Trail and Valley Trail leak out
Intel's next-generation mobile SoCs have been detailed in leaked slides. The successor to the new Clover Trail platform is codenamed Bay Trail-T and is scheduled for release in 2014. It will move to a 22nm process, down from the Clover Trail's 32-nm process, and will bost performance by 50 - 60 percent. Bay Trail-T will also move to a quad-core architecture, but will drop hyperthreading in the transition.
Further, the Bay Trail-T will also incorporate Intel's current HD 4000 integrated GPU architecture, that currently features in its Ivy Bridge notebook processors, which should hold it in good stead against future ARM/Mali SoC designs. As it also delivers its performance improvements at half the power requirements of Clover Trail designs, battery life well in excess of 10 hours for x86-based tablets will become a reality in the next 12-18 months.
Some details have also emerged about the successor to the Bay Trail-T architecture, which is known internally as Valley View-T. It will be the first 'out-of-order' Atom processor and will be based on the Silver Mont core. It's quad-core design will be clocked at up to 2.1GHz, while it will also offer full support for DirectX 11. In addition to finally making the Atom platform attractive to game developers, the Valley View-T SoC will support high-definition graphics on displays with resolutions as high as 2560x1600.
