Rumor: Google, Dish Network in new wireless service talks

Dish in talks with number of non-industry parties

Google is rumored to be in talks with Dish Network over creating a new wireless carrier, competing against Verizon and AT&T. Though it is not clear if a Google-supported mobile phone network will come to fruition, the software giant's move to wireless mirrors early discussions it had over its gigabit fiber project in Kansas City, and could potentially end up disrupting the mobile carrier industry.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the talks are not advanced enough to suggest such a project will come to fruition, however Dish chairman Charlie Ergen did confirm the company is in talks with companies "who would like to be in the industry" suggesting it may end up creating a wireless carrier, if not through Google. Dish is already planning to roll out its own LTE-Advanced network, though it still has a number of hurdles to overcome before it goes live.

This is not Google's first push into the world of wireless communications. It received a patent for wireless network access auctions, a way to charge customers based on network traffic and user-selectable priority, earlier this year. The company has also expressed an interest in controlling white spaces in the UK, and also made a failed bid during the FCC's 700MHz auction in 2007.

It would really be disruptive if Google provides the communication. We could then have unlimited access...
The move could also be inevitable, since there are more and more wireless companies that want to charge Google for the traffic.
