Voyager to offer international service without roaming fees

updated 02:03 pm EST, Thu November 15, 2012

Patent-pending technology uses cloud, no extra software

Voyager Mobile is preparing to offer a new international service, promising that users on the plan "won't pay a penny of roaming charges." Called Project Global Voyager, the service uses "patent-pending global wireless technology" that allows a mobile phone to be used internationally, without any per-minute roaming charges being applied to the account.

While little is revealed about how the service will operate, it has been described as being "completely network cloud based," and not requiring any extra software to be installed onto devices. It will apparently offer not only international voice calls, but also texts and data access, and will work with dual GSM and CDMA devices.

Though a per-minute, per-text, or per-megabyte cost will not apply to the service, it is likely to form either as an add-on subscription or part of an entire service plan. Voyager hopes to launch it in 2013, but has declined to say when in the year it will begin.
