CyanogenMod changes domain name after $10,000 demand

updated 07:32 am EST, Thu November 15, 2012

Domain owner found impersonating team members, earning referrals

The website for CyanogenMod transferred from a .com to a .org, following the domain holder's demand for money. The move follows the Android ROM community's discovery that the domain holder had been attempting to make money on the domain and project, which lead to the Cyanogen team receiving a demand for $10,000 in exchange for control of the domain.

The domain owner was found to be impersonating Steve "Cyanogen" Kondik, with the aim of forming referral deals, and therefore earning off the non-profit's work. Once this was uncovered, domain holder Ahmet Deveci demanded $10,000 for the domain, a sum that the community's blog claims "we won't (and can't) pay." In response to this, Deveci sabotaged the DNS, preventing anyone from being able to access the project.

Following threats of legal action, Deveci went on the defensive, claiming documents posted as evidence from various parties were "easily misinterpreted." On a post through Google+, Deveci has confirmed he is in the process of transferring the domain to the CyanogenMod team, after owning the URL for the last three years.

CyanogenMod will now be using the .org domain as its primary location, with the .com redirecting to it. The team has requested its users not to "perform any vigilante actions," wishing to move on and concentrate on development.
