Updates for Office for Mac fix issues, improve security

Microsoft's Office for Mac team today released software updates for both the 2011 and 2008 versions of Office for Mac. The updates are highly recommended, as they fix "extremely important" functionality issues and improve overall security. The 2011 and 2008 updates are available as free downloads from Microsoft Support.

For the 2011 version of Office for Mac, the update, among other things, fixes an issue in which automatic configuration did not work properly with Outlook.com accounts. It also improves functionality for distribution lists and addresses an issue that caused Gmail accounts to function improperly within Outlook. Microsoft recommends that users ensure their system is running at least OS X 10.5.8 before downloading the update.

The update for the 2008 version of Office for Mac improves security. It fixes a vulnerability that allowed attackers to overwrite the contents of a computer's memory with malicious code. Microsoft recommends that users make certain their computer is running at least Mac OS X 10.4.9 Tiger or later before downloading this update.
