Earthlink completes work on fiber network in Tennessee

Middle-mile network offers 10Gbps connections to businesses

EarthLink has completed construction on its fiber optic network in Tennessee, a project it started in 2011. The Eastern Tennessee Middle Mile Fiber Broadband Project laid more than 500 miles of fiber in "underserved communities" across the state, running between Nashville and Knoxville from east to west, and between Blountville and Chattanooga.

As part of the construction, EarthLink deployed 15 Dense Wave Division Multiplexing-capable Points of Presence, from which it can provide long-haul service of up to 10Gbps to businesses and institutions. While the connection will not be generally made available to consumers, it will help last-mile providers in offering faster connection speeds to their clientele.

While one construction project ends, others begin for the company. Late last month, EarthLink announced it would extend its fiber network from Miami, FL to Virginia, increasing capacity in areas such as Ashburn, Atlanta, Charlotte, and Orlando; and building its first fiber network into Texas.
