Verizon to offer $199, $99, and free WP8 options

Verizon is set to offer a Windows Phone 8-powered handset for free on contract by the end of the year. The news comes as the nation's largest carrier launches Windows Phone 8 handsets from Nokia and HTC today. The addition of a free-on-contract handset will allow Verizon to stake out a number of different price points from free to $199 for Windows Phone 8 offerings.

The Verge carried news of the development today, with a Verizon executive telling the site that "ultimately before the end of the year we will have a device that comes in at the free point."

The carrier has not yet specified which Windows Phone 8 model it will offer for free. Verizon has already said that HTC's Windows Phone 8X will be available at the $199 price point, with Nokia's Lumia 822 occupying the $99 price point. That would seem to leave Samsung's Ativ Odyssey handset as the only major device for the free-on-contract level.
