Nexus 4 sells out on Google Play after 24 minutes

updated 03:56 pm EST, Tue November 13, 2012

32GB Nexus 10 also sells out upon release

Google's new Nexus 4 smartphone debuted to quick sales today, as customers exhausted the Google Play Store's supply of the device within a half hour of its release. A look at the Nexus 4's product page shows that both the 8GB and 16GB models of the new LG-built Nexus smartphone now show "coming soon" for their availability, indicating that they are out of stock at least temporarily. The 32GB model of the Samsung-produced Nexus 10 tablet also appears to have sold out shortly after its release, though 16GB units are still available.

The Nexus 4 sells in an unlocked configuration on Google's Play Store, at a price of $299 for the 8GB model and $349 for the 16GB model. At that price point, the new, unlocked Nexus phone undercuts even the subsidized price points for some comparable handsets, leading some to believe Google may be subsidizing the cost of the handset in order to gain market share.

Recent reports from Android Community have noted that, at least earlier today, the Nexus 4 was occasionally reappearing as "in stock," indicating that Google may have been having issues with its ordering system earlier in the day. As of press time, though, the device is apparently listed as sold out in both the United States and United Kingdom Play Stores. Interested customers can sign up for an email update notifying them when the device becomes available again, and the Nexus 4 will also be available at T-Mobile in the coming weeks.
