Kim Dotcom's me.ga domain name seized by Gabon government

updated 06:17 pm EST, Wed November 7, 2012

Alternative domain available; Dotcom claims US DOJ witch hunt

Kim Dotcom's plan of launching Mega, a "bigger, better, faster, stronger, safer" successor to file locker Megaupload has been temporarily stymied. Gabon's government has suspended the announced domain name, before it could be utilized by Dotcom. Despite a US State Department report citing Gabon for rampant corruption and disregard of international law, the blocking official claimed to not want to allow the country to be used by "unscrupulous people."

Gabon Communication Minister Blaise Louembe said "I have instructed my departments to immediately suspend the site www.me.ga" citing a concern over intellectual property rights, and a desire to "fight cyber crime effectively." The minister added that Gabon "cannot serve as a platform or screen for committing acts aimed at violating copyrights."

Dotcom reports that the domain name lock won't slow the expected January 2013 launch of Mega, and he is in possession of an alternative domain name. He tweeted that the suspension of the domain name by the country "demonstrates the bad faith witch hunt the US government is on."

Dotcom gained international notoriety after a US warrant for his arrrest and extradition was served in a New Zealand court resulting in the seizure of his New Zealand properties and liquid assests. However, the New Zealand High Court has currently placed all legal proceedings against Dotcom on hold until the FBI and the US government hands over all the evidence it has against Dotcom.
