Apple issues updates for Canon, Lexmark printers

updated 02:00 am EST, Wed November 7, 2012

Affects users running OS X 10.6 and higher

Continuing a series of updates of printer drivers to add new models and bring older printers into compatibility with OS X 10.8.x, Apple on Tuesday released updated drivers for Lexmark and Canon printers, both being unusual since they were previously updated last month. The updates are recommended for users running OS X 10.6 and later, including both Lion and Mountain Lion. The Canon drivers are grouped under the update version 2.11, while the Lexmark drivers are now updated to v2.10.

Both sets of updates are just one version number higher than the most recent release, suggesting that changes are minor. Updated printers will show a driver version number of 11.2, and a few new printers have been added. Among them are the CS 310, 410 and 510 series, along with the M1100, M3100, M5100, MS310, MS410, MS510, MS610 and MS810 models.

By contrast, the Canon update doesn't modify existing drivers, but adds support for the iP7200 series, the MG5400 and MG6300 series, and the Pro-10 and Pro-100 series. All other drivers are unchanged, so the update will only appear when users attempt to connect one of the newly-added printers to their computer or home network.

The Lexmark update is 176.6MB in size, while the Canon additions add up to a total of 342.52MB. Both were last updated on October 4.
