Amazon changes Prime pricing, adds monthly payment option

updated 07:08 am EST, Tue November 6, 2012

Monthly option more expensive, easier to afford

Amazon is testing out a different payment system for its Prime service. Traditionally set at $80 per year, the unlimited free two-day delivery service has been changed to allow for a monthly payment of $8 instead of a lump sum. While easier for customers to pay, opting away from the yearly payment works out to be almost $17 more expensive.

The $8 per month option still includes all of the usual Amazon Prime features, according to Hacking Netflix. The ability to stream movies and TV shows through Prime Instant Video, as well as the Kindle Owners' Lending Library access, are retained in this new option.

While the monthly payment option will make Prime and its Instant Video service more attractive to those using Netflix and Hulu, the pricing change does appear to be limited to just the US. The UK's own version, though not including the Instant Video option, is still displaying only the yearly payment option.
