Microsoft pushes prepaid Skype cards to UK stores

updated 05:21 am EST, Mon November 5, 2012

Skype prepaid card scheme set to expand to other countries

Microsoft has launched its prepaid card system for Skype in the United Kingdom. The prepaid cards can add credit to Skype accounts used by customers lacking access to debit cards, credit cards or PayPal, or could be used by those not wanting to link their payment information to the messaging and calling service.

Available in 10 and 20 denominations, the prepaid cards will be offered in 1,400 stores nationwide, including the Asda, Currys, PC World, Sainsburys', and WHSmith chains. A scratch panel on the back of the card reveals a PIN, which can then be used to add funds to an existing Skype account through a website.

Skype prepaid cards were introduced in Mexico earlier this year, making the UK the second country to receive the payment option. Microsoft plans to offer the cards in other countries, with creditable amounts customized to local denominations.
