Sales split kept quiet
Apple has announced sales of three million iPads over the launch weekend for the iPad mini and fourth-generation iPad. The amount is said to be double the number achieved during the third-gen iPad's launch, but Apple isn't breaking down Mini sales versus fourth-gen ones, making it difficult to judge the success of either product. Both tablets launched in 34 countries, casting an unusually wide net for an iPad release.
Only Wi-Fi models are shipping to start with; Apple is promising that 3G/4G-equipped versions will arrive "in a few weeks in the US," and "in many more countries later this year." A prepared statement from Apple CEO Tim Cook adds that the company has "practically sold out" of the Mini, but that it's working to make supply meet demand.
